In the past, the breed was used as a utility dog and functions as a pet at present. They may be slightly difficult to train since they are dominant and seem to please themselves first rather than the owner. Exercise needs are moderate and coat care is extensive especially for rough-coated dogs.

The breed has a square body build, flat head with wrinkles, broad muzzle, small almond-shaped eyes, and black/blue tongue and lips. The coat may be smooth or rough, with well-developed undercoat for good isolation. The tail curves over the back.
