Chow Chow Dogs
Chow Chow Dogs are haloed with glory, admiration and rapture, as this is but the most unique breed of dogs on the planet. They are not like most other dogs in terms of appearance and disposition, and it takes a certain type of character on the part of the owner to be a decent Chow Chow owner. There are many myths and misinterpretations surrounding the breed, and this is also due to improper and uncontrolled breeding that took place in the 1980s.
Chow Chows are known for their beautiful lion-like appearance. They are robust and balanced, and they have a profuse coat that forms a mane around the neck. Chow Chow Dogs are famous for their blue-black tongues. One legend says that when God was painting the sky blue, he spilled a few drops of paint on the ground and a Chow Chow licked them up and thus blued its own tongue forever.
There are two coat types common to Chow Chow Dogs – smooth coat and rough coat. Chow Chows come in the following colors: red, black, cinnamon, blue and cream, and only solid colors are acceptable. Chow Chows are well accustomed to indoor life, but they require daily rigorous exercise. Initially, they were bred as hunting and guarding dogs. The Chow Chow Dog has been known for thousands of years, and he proved an excellent helpmate in various activities. Chow Chows were and are apt to withstand harsh weather, and they were used for pulling sleds. Their exact origin is uncertain, but they are likely to have been influenced by some Spitz-type dog or a Roman Mastiff-type breed.
Chow Chows are great family companions, and they are very loyal to their families. These dogs are notoriously obstinate and willful. They cannot be forced to do anything. They have a very acute sense of dignity, and they like to act on their own account. Being very assertive and strong willed, they appreciate similar qualities in their owners. It is an absolute must for a Chow Chow owner to be able to establish himself as an alpha member in the house, because otherwise the dog will take over and have everything his own way. In this case, the owner will lose control over the dog and will actually be submitted by the dog. Chow Chow Dogs are naturally dominant and strong-willed, and hence they are not good for inexperienced dog owners.
