People considering buying Chow Chows, should know where to look. Unfortunately, not all breeders are educated and reproduce for the betterment of the breed. It is important to find a breeder that has been breeding and raising Chow Chows for many years. They should be knowledgeable about the breed and all of the potential health problems in the breed. An AKC registration does not guarantee quality, because the AKC does not regulate breeders. The certification guarantees that the animal is purebred and is the offspring of the parents on the certificate, as long as the breeder is honest.
Most quality breeders belong to local or national clubs where they correspond with other breeders. Besides being knowledgeable about the Chow Chow, they should screen for genetic diseases in their stock, offer a written guarantee, and offer assistance to a new owner. Their goals for offspring should include good health, temperament and soundness. Many breeders have their puppies as part of the "family." Chow Chows that are raised in a home where socialization is part of the puppy's early growth are normally very well adjusted. When going to look at a puppy, you should have the opportunity to fully examine all Chow Chows and observe the puppies running in an open area.
