Chow Chows - History
The origin of Chow Chows is not completely known. It is believed that the breed is very old. The Chinese probably developed it. There is a theory that the Chow Chow is the ancestor of a few breeds such as the Samoyed, Pomeranian, and others. The evidence of the breed's existence dates back to as far as the 7th century AD. Drawings of dogs similar in appearance to the modern Chow Chow were found on pottery and other items belonging to Chinese Emperors. The dog was used for a variety of activities including guarding and accompanying hunters during a hunt.
The breed has always drawn much attention. Much of the breed's popularity is due to its appearance. The dog has a dense mane and a blue tongue. There is a legend explaining the origin of the blue tongue. It is believed that the Chow Chow accompanied God while he was painting the sky blue. The dog licked a few drops of paint that God spilled. From that time on, the breed has a blue tongue.
English sailors brought the Chow Chow dog to Great Britain. The breed started to be called the Chow Chow due to the name's reference to a different staff that sailors carried along. The breed appeared in the United States in the 19th century. It entered a show ring and drew much attention. The breed's outlandish appearance and temperament peculiarities have paved the way to the hearts of many dog fanciers in the United States. The national breed club was formed in 1906. Since that time on, the club has been promoting Chow Chows by education and developing breeders' guidelines.
