It is believed that the breed originated in China where it was used as a hunting dog, herding, and guarding companion, and was possibly used in cart pulling. The breed’s appearance suggests links to Spitz-like dogs. They are referred to as utility or northern dogs. A chow chow photo will sometimes include the kennel or the littermate puppies.
