The breed is medium in size and averages the weight of 45-70 pounds. The height at the wither is about 18-22 inches. They are not recommended for novice owners, as the breed has always been used for guarding and may be hard to manage.

The breed is easily recognized by the blue-black tongue and almost straight hind legs that make the walk a little stilted. They come in two coat varieties: smooth coats and rough coats. Rough coats are more difficult to groom and require daily attention. A chow dog pic will have the prize dogs of the kennels and a picture of the foundation dog.
